Description: The West Riding of Yorkshire was the largest of England's historic counties. This volume, the first of two for the area, covers the northern half of the territory from the outskirts of York to the edge of the Lake District. It is full of contrasts, from the urbanised landscape of the cities of Leeds, with its proud civic buildings by Cuthbert Brodrick, and Bradford, possessor of one of the finest collections of commercial warehouses in the country, to their hinterland of tight-knit mill-towns and villages pushing into the Pennines. There can be found the highly distinctive houses of the seventeenth-century minor gentry, and the substantial yeoman farmers and clothiers. To the north-west are the still sparsely populated Yorkshire Dales - Ruskin's 'truly wonderful country', its beauties and curiosities admired by tourists since the eighteenth century. On the gentler eastern edge of the Pennines are the major survivals of the Cistercian Order: Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, the nearby cathedral town of Ripon and spa town of Harrogate, and the opulently agricultural 'broad acres' beyond, forming part of the Vale of York, counting among its monuments the magnificent designed landscape of Bramham Park. Description: This authoritative guide, the companion to Yorkshire West Riding: Leeds, Bradford and the North, covers a vast area marked by tremendous diversity of both landscape and buildings. The territory is rich in medieval churches and castles, 17th-century houses and 18th-century mansions, yet it is also deservedly famous for its outstanding 19th- and 20th-century ecclesiastical, civic, commercial and industrial buildings. Major examples of every period of English architecture are represented, from Selby Abbey to the palatial country house of the Earls Fitzwilliam at Wentworth Woodhouse, and from Halifax Town Hall to Sheffield's Park Hill flats and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield. In the fine Pevsner tradition, this book situates the region's full array of buildings within geological, local, national, and international contexts. . • Waterstones West Yorkshire Buses in Transition

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: On 1 April 1974, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive was created by merging the municipal bus fleets of Bradford City Transport, Halifax Corporation with Calderdale Joint Omnibus Committee, Huddersfield Joint Omnibus Committee and Leeds City Transport. The new WYPTE was divided into four districts: Bradford, Calderdale (previously Halifax and Todmorden), Kirklees (previously Huddersfield) and Leeds. A new livery of cream and light green slowly but surely began to replace the blue and cream of Bradford, the orange, green and cream of Halifax, the red and cream of Huddersfield, and the two shades of green of Leeds. With over 1,500 vehicles and more than 6,000 staff along with the numerous garage and depot facilities, this was a huge operation. By 1976 changes were being made to the livery - while retaining the colour scheme much of the lining details were replaced and the district name under the Metro logo gave way to Metrobus. The photographs in the book illustrate this process of absorption of the bus fleets of Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds from before 1974 up to the end of the decade. Description: The merging of Bristol-based Badgerline and Scottish-based GRT Holding saw the creation of First Bus in West Yorkshire. After the corporate logo was introduced, local liveries arrived. However, by 1998 First were pushing for its 'Willow Leaf' livery and corporate interior as the standard. Former West Yorkshire PTE vehicles were withdrawn and replaced by the standard Volvo/Wrightbus vehicles from 2004. The low-floor era brought in 120 Volvo/Alexander double-deckers and 20 Volvo saloons with Wrightbus bodies. Investment in Bradford and Leeds was apparent, eventually trickling down elsewhere. In 2012 First refreshed the livery with a more pastel colour scheme, as ninety-eight new buses arrived in Leeds from the Olympic Games. Newer vehicles were also cascaded into Halifax and Huddersfield. Scott Poole documents the ups and downs of this operator, with a range of previously unpublished images. Description: Opened in 1931 as Yeadon Aerodrome, Leeds-Bradford Airport is the largest in Yorkshire. Regular flights began from the airport in 1935 with a service to Newcastle, Edinburgh and London (Heston). During the war, the airfield was used as a shadow factory and constructed almost 700 Lancaster bombers, as well as almost 4,500 Avro Ansons. Civil flights began again in 1947 and by 1978 Regional Airport status had been granted as long as runways were extended. This work began in 1982 and the new airport opened in 1984, with Wardair flying transatlantic to Canada in Boeing 747s. The airport has continued to grow, with new terminal buildings and new hangers to accommodate Boeing 737s in the midnoughties. Leeds-Bradford airport continues to grow in its ninth decade. • Waterstones Bradford Buses

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Set in the Aire Valley of West Yorkshire and surrounded by several towns, Bradford maintains a proud transport history and was the first - and last - city in the UK to operate trolleybuses. Although its municipal transport system was subsumed into the West Yorkshire PTE in 1974 and thus lost its identity, much variety could still be seen in the city from the three NBC subsidiaries whose buses came in from beyond the former Bradford boundary. Unlike many other towns and cities across the UK, following deregulation in 1986 Bradford suffered little from newcomers who attempted to challenge the incumbent operators, and those who were brave enough to try were soon rebuffed and disappeared. In this book all the companies, large and small, who have operated buses into the city since the mid-1960s have been included to illustrate the variety that could be seen and capture memories of the past in a pictorial history of Bradford's buses over half a century. • Waterstones West Yorkshire Cinemas and Theatres

    Price: £14.99

Description: Nobody could have predicted in the first half of the Twentieth century that 'going to the flicks' would be rapidly superseded in later years by television. Buildings of all sizes and descriptions - some having only existed for a relatively short time - quickly became redundant and have struggled for survival or an alternative use since the demise. In the heavy industrial areas of West Yorkshire particularly Bradford and Leeds, there was a great need for entertainment. And in some ways it was only natural that the new film industry should give rise to purpose-built cinemas across the entire region. Although theatre-going declined with the growth of the cinemas, it is pleasing to note that live theatre is still very much alive today in a number of the towns and cities covered here. The various developments of screen and stage in West Yorkshire have been admirably captured over the years by the Yorkshire Post's able photographers and featured in this book. Using a simple A to Z format Peter Tuffrey has made it quick and easy to examine the history - and in some cases find a picture - of a favourite cinema or theatre. • Waterstones Railways of the West Riding of Yorkshire

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The West Riding of Yorkshire boasted the most complex railway network in Britain, comprised at various times of seven railway companies, with an eighth trying to secure a foothold, eleven significant joint lines and several minor systems. With no overall strategic pattern of territory or route, the companies seemed to vie incessantly for supremacy, often at the expense of efficiency with the significant duplication of facilities: over twenty-five towns and villages had two passenger stations, while some even had three or four! This book reviews the local history, including its economy and key industries. It describes the need for the railways and the political and geographical challenges they faced. It discusses the impact on the region of 'railway mania' experienced throughout Britain in the mid-nineteenth century. The many locomotives that worked these lines are celebrated, with a behind-the-scenes look at their yards, sheds and roundhouses. The lost branch lines and stations are remembered. Finally, there are individual chapters covering Leeds, Doncaster, Barnsley and the coalfields, Sheffield and Rotherham, Airedale and Wharfedale, the Aire and Calder watershed, the Calder Valley and Huddersfield.
