Review: This was a much loved book from my childhood, and I bought this for some nostalgia and also to hopefully entertain my children. However, the new translation has removed all the vast majority of funny lines that I remembered. It might be amusing to somebody who is unfamiliar with the original, but unfortunately I'm not in that category and cannot recommend it. Edited to add: two years later, I've managed to find an original version and it's even better than I remember as a child. Look for the translation by Frederick Norton - it's so far above and beyond this travesty. Now I've had a chance to directly compare, I'm revising my original review down to a single star - and it's lucky to get that.
