Description: Murder is only the beginning for Banks and his team. The gruesome double murder at an Eastvale property developer's luxury home should be an open and shut case for Superintendent Banks and his team of detectives. There's a clear link to the notoriously vicious Albanian mafia, men who left the country suspiciously soon after the death. Then they find a cache of spy-cam videos hidden in the house - and Annie and Gerry's investigation pivots to the rape of a young girl that could cast the murders in an entirely different light. Banks's friend Zelda, increasingly uncertain of her future in Britain's hostile environment, thinks she will be safer in Moldova hunting the men who abducted, raped and enslaved her than she is Yorkshire or London. Her search takes her back to the orphanage where it all began - but by stirring up the murky waters of the past, Zelda is putting herself in greater danger than any she's seen before. And as the threat escalates, so does the danger for Banks and those who love Zelda. Waterstones Not Dark Yet - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Review: Not Dark Yet is the first of the DCI Banks stories that disappointed me. I think this is in part because I hadn't realised from reading the Amazon promotional description of the book that it is the third novel of a loosely connected trilogy (and I hadn't read the two preceding related novels). In addition, unlike other DCI Banks stories, this one doesn't work well as a 'standalone' novel. For example, who is Zelda and why does Banks have a soft spot for her which affects his objectivity when issues relating to her are brought to light. However, this wasn't the only aspect of the novel I found disappointing. I felt the story was padded out by too many descriptions of the music and musicians that Banks enjoys, and the numerous reminiscences of events and people he had encountered when he was much younger. I also disliked the way he tended to ignore advice from health professionals (& others) or protocol, thereby putting himself and others into danger. Not too bright for someone who was supposed to be a police DCI. Finally I didn't warm to most of the characters in the story - perhaps my view of today's society is rather dated in terms of human behaviour and civility? So, was there anything I did like about the story? Well there are a number of action packed scenes that ooze menace and drama, and the plot certainly held my interest. But, sadly, overall this novel did not live up to my expectations which has been shaped from reading a lot of the early DCI Banks novels in the series. Perhaps I may have felt more positive about Not Dark Yet if I had read read books 25 & 26 in the series before this one?
