Description: Shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2019. An illuminating tale of power, rebellion, darkness and light. There was once a little boy who was afraid of the dark. There's nothing unusual about that. Most children are afraid of the dark at one time of another. But this little boy was a Prince, and he decided that when he became King, he would do something about the dark. He would ban it. When the King bans the dark completely, installing an artificial sun, and enforcing anti-dark laws, it seems like a good idea. The citizens don't need to worry about any of the scary things that might live in the dark. But what happens when nobody can sleep, and the citizens revolt? Will the King face his fears and turn the lights off? The King Who Banned the Dark is a beautiful and thought-provoking story about how we need the dark in order to enjoy the light.

Review: What if you had enough power that if you didn’t like something you could simply ban it? The young prince in the story is so scared of the dark that when he becomes king, he decides to ban it. Written in the form of a traditional fairy tale this is a very astute exploration of politics, power and its abuse as well as revolt against it. Using dark and light as a main theme allows the story to be very visually engaging, making it easier for younger audiences to grasp the underlying themes of the story. Using fireworks as the ultimate weapon of revolt is particularly effective, creating a great contrast, visually, to the rest of the narrative. This is an ingenious, entertaining story which also reminds us that sometimes you just have to take the rough with the smooth, and that balance in life is all that is needed.

Description: The book dives into the history of sedition and censorship in colonial India. Closely examining 100 texts that the British Empire banned, censored or deemed seditious, the work brings to life these lost gems from India's freedom, cultural, and social movements. It includes writing by figures famous and obscure, of events immortalised and forgotten, by Indians and non-Indians, by people jailed and free, by politicians and missionaries, by travellers and novelists, and in several Indian as well as European languages. Each excerpt illuminates not just its author's thought processes, but the times in which it was composed and circulated. Waterstones Banned & Censored - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
