Description: An evidence-based guide to the uses, benefits and practical application of a plant-based diet for all health professionals, taking both a holistic and a systems-based (heart, respiratory system, diabetes, kidneys, liver, gut) approach. The book draws on the University of Winchester's Plant-based nutrition course, the first university course on plant-based nutrition in the UK. Edited by two cancer doctors based in the UK and Canada and a specialist dietitian, chapter authors include the key exponents of plant-based nutrition in their chosen field, many with international reputations. While each chapter looks at an individual body system, the aggregate evidence from all authors is clear - eating plant-based whole foods will save millions of lives and years of suffering from chronic diseases. Review: Drs Shireen and Zahra Kassam, along with registered dietitian Lisa Simon, have succeeded in producing a truly excellent resource in the field of plant-based nutrition. The clinical community has been crying out for this much-needed textbook, which not only details the "whys" of recommending a whole food plant-based (WFPB) diet for our patients but also - and very importantly - the "how". No stone has been left unturned, with chapter 1 giving a detailed overview of the impact of plant-based dietary patterns on health and disease and the final three chapters dedicated to examining the barriers to following a WFPB diet, actioning this in clinical practice and - finally - the imperative need for us to adopt this way of eating for planetary, as well as individual, health. The intervening chapters follow a system-based approach, with contributions for numerous well-respected experts in the field. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and am so grateful to the editors and authors for bringing this to our bookshelves. I will return to this time and again in my daily work, and also for general interest's sake. Thank you.

Review: As a health professional working with clients 1:1 in nutrition and someone who has just started a masters degree in Sports & Exercise Nutrition, I am so grateful for this book. My clients come to me looking for help on a plant-based diet and this book has provided me with the updated evidence on the topic so I can best advise my clients. It draws on the extensive experience and knowledge of experts in multiple fields of medicine and nutrition, providing us with strong evidence based information across a multitude of different health issues including cardiovascular disease, weight management, cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, autoimmune disease and mental health, as well as plant-based nutrition for athletes - my current area of focus and research. I highly recommend this book for every health professional in order to serve our clients and patients better.
