Review: I highky recommend this book. It's a breath of fresh air for treating clients with long-standing treatment resistant issues. This book is more detailed and explanatory than "Reinventing Your Life" by the same authors. It seems more honest about what the authors & colleagues think about people with personality issues and emotional dysregulation problems. The main ideas are to accept past trauma as being a "natural response" or part of being born overly emotional. No-one is to blame as the abuser etc couldn't find another way to deal with the clients hyper-emotionality as a child. The client is not to blame as they did the best they could at the time. The client then is brought to accept reality and the need for change. The client learns about their own dysfunctional beliefs, thoughts & behaviours (schemas) and begin a process of standard CBT techniques to erradicate these dysfunctions. What makes Schema Therapy different from standard CBT is the ability to help the client connect their current problems to past schema's, to externalise the schema before destroying it, thereby not giving the client the sense that the self is being destroyed. What is not clear is the difference between Complex Trauma (or Complex Traumatic Stress Disorder) and Borderline Personailty Disorder. The reader is left wandering whether they are one and the same condition. This results in a sense that perpetrators of abuse couldn't help themselves abuse the client and can walk away with impunity, while the client has to accept and "move on" with life. Certainly the book is aimed at the practitioner rather than the client. I can't help but wander why there is such a marked difference. Do the authors view their clients as of lesser value than their colleagues, as less capable of understanding and worthy of less respect? In contrast to "Re-inventing Your Life" the difference in phraseology and even the difference in the book covers, to me, betray a fundamental disrespect for the client which the authors may not be aware of. Nonetheless, the potential to help clients with this simple integrative and flexible technique is great and I would highly commend it to you.

Review: Unlike many others, this is not, properly, a practice guide. Nonetheless is full of brief interviews with BPD clients and the authors add many tricks and tips for dealing with each session. But, i.p.o.v., lacks exercises, protocols, records, tables, and most of what chartered psychologists use with clients to up to date the treatment improvements. Regarding theory is quite a bit stodgy, while I myself find a lot more worthvalue those insights developed by Linehan and Mclean Hospital, whose books are plenty of forms, daily cards and guided practice.

Description: Options can be limited for those who do not respond to standard eating disorder treatments. Schema therapy is one of the new exciting frontiers in the treatment of this clinical population, offering a much-needed model that integrates both developmental and deeper level personality factors. Schema Therapy for Eating Disorders is the first book of its kind, guiding clinicians to deliver the schema model to those with entrenched or enduring eating pathology, and in turn encouraging further clinical research on this approach to treatment. Written by an international team of leading schema therapy experts, and with a foreword by Wendy Behary and Jeffrey Young, this book draws on their clinical knowledge and research experience. Comprehensive and practical, this book introduces the rapidly growing evidence base for schema therapy, outlines the application of this model across eating disorder diagnostic groups, as well as individual and group modalities, and explores practical considerations, common challenges and the therapeutic process. The book includes detailed case examples, which provide a theoretical and practical basis for working with therapist-client schema chemistry and transference, and outlines methods of ensuring therapist self-care in the face of difficult and often long-term work. Innovative and accessible, this fresh look at the treatment of eating disorders will be an invaluable resource for clinicians in the field.

Waterstones Schema Therapy - A Phase-Oriented Approach

Currently out of stock

Price: £31.95

Brand: Waterstones

Description: This practical guide presents an innovative approach to managing individual and group schema therapy. By structuring the overall therapeutic process into four distinct phases, each with specific attitudes, goals and exercises, the therapist and client can work together, one step at a time, toward a successful outcome. The book offers clear guidelines for achieving an optimal balance between confrontation and collaboration, between cognitive, behavioural and experiential techniques, between rules and freedom, and between work and play. Phase 1 focuses on safety and security; phase 2 rocks the boat in stirring up old pain and emotions, phase 3 encourages the client to take control and try new things, and phase 4 is about reinventing yourself and learning to live happily as a human being - with all its associated pain and pitfalls. Each chapter contains a wealth of phase-specific exercises, points of concern and practical tips. Waterstones Schema Therapy with Children and Adolescents

Price: £36.95

Brand: Waterstones

Description: This book presents the first English language guide to adapting schema therapy (ST) for children and adolescents. Written by the developers of the approach, it presents a wide range of innovative child- and parent-specific techniques, with detailed guidance on how to apply them across five key developmental stages from infancy to young adulthood. Case studies bring the material to life, and the focus extends beyond the core therapeutic relationship to what the authors call 'schema coaching' - encouraging parents and carers to consider how their own entrenched ways of thinking, behaving and responding may contribute to or exacerbate a young person's issues and needs. In adult schema therapy, therapists differentiate between child modes, parental models, coping modes and the Healthy Adult mode. For young people, the authors focus exclusively on the child modes and in place of the Healthy Adult introduce a healthy Wise Child mode (sometimes called Clever Sally or Clever Sam). Care is taken not to label as 'maladaptive' modes which may still be in the normal range of behaviour for a child's specific developmental phase. With detailed guidance on how to enact age-appropriate schema dialogues, and imaginative use of play to reinforce or replace imagery rescripting, Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents allows therapists to help young people put difficult events behind them and choose new, healthier ways forward. The first book to adapt schema therapy for children and adolescents - presents the ST-CA model and provides a clear, practical guide to clinical implementation Approaches schemas and modes from a perspective of developmental stages, with specific guidance and creative ideas for engaging young people in each age group Integrates the child's environment, involving parents and other carers in children's schema therapy by exploring their own behavioral patterns and schema modes Written by experienced practitioners who are the pioneers of theory, research and practice on schema therapy and interventions for children and young people. Description: Everyone thrives on love, comfort, and the safety of family, friends, and community. But if you are denied these basic comforts early in life, whether through a lack of physical affection or emotional bonding, you may develop intense fears of abandonment that can last well into adulthood-fears so powerful that they can actually cause you to push people away. If you suffer from fears of abandonment, you may have underlying feelings of anger, shame, fear, anxiety, depression, and grief. These emotions are intense and painful, and when they surface they can lead to a number of negative behaviors, such as jealousy, clinging, and emotional blackmail. In Love Me, Don't Leave Me, therapist Michelle Skeen combines acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), schema therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to help you identify the root of your fears. In this book you'll learn how schema coping behaviors-deeply entrenched and automatic behaviors rooted in childhood experiences and fears-can take over and cause you to inadvertently sabotage your relationships. By recognizing these coping behaviors and understanding their cause, you will not only gain powerful insights into your own mind, but also into the minds of those around you. If you are ready to break the self-fulfilling cycle of mistrust, clinginess, and heartbreak and start building lasting, trusting relationships, this book will be your guide.
