Review: An amazing debut novel. In a world where smell is quite literally the most important sense of all, the witty and wonderful Rakel (who is supremely gifted in the nose department) is trying to use her powerful talent with fragrance to make a living for herself and her very unwell father. Unfortunately in attempting to prove herself in the capital of the desert land she hails from (Aramtesh) she meets Ash, a brooding palace guard of many dark and mysterious secrets and ends up being accused of poisoning the crown prince. The unlikely pair end up on a quest across the magical varying lands of their kingdom trying to solve the riddle of the royal poisoning and find a much needed cure to save the prince in time (and their own necks) while avoiding (sometimes) the perils that come their way. I can't wait till book 2

Review: I really enjoyed this - I loved the whole concept and the unique world building. The main storyline doesn’t really kick off for a good hundred pages plus, but I love the build up too - it didn’t really feel like buildup, and I would happily have read a book just about Rakel making awesome scent oils haha. But the quest for the cure and how it all comes together is really lovely, as is the relationship between Rakel and Ash - it felt slow enough to be reasonable. And there’s so much intrigue for the future and set up for book two! This one actually wraps up reasonably well (for all that there’s a cliffhanger it’s more relevant to what will come than tying up what has happened, which is excellent) but I’m definitely dying to know what all the hints have meant. I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment :)
