Review: I’m indebted to Greg Koukl. His book Tactics revolutionised my approach to personal evangelism and equipped me to engage in conversation with people of all backgrounds and persuasions. However, while I have always valued Greg as an apologist, and have been impressed at his ability to articulate at a popular level clear thinking on important issues, I began to read this book with some apprehension: I do not like books that oversell themselves. To me, the title, and more particularly the sub-title, could not possibly describe the contents of a book that is only 200 pages long. I have been pleasantly surprised, and truly impressed by this well thought out, very attractive summary of the Christian worldview. Greg is a master-teacher, with tremendous ability to communicate complex thoughts at a level understandable to almost anyone. In the preface Greg states that “life is a kind of story, and this Story has an Author”. He continues, “In this book I want to tell you that Story - the Story of reality - and help you see your place in it”. The book divides into six large sections and concludes with a brief epilogue. The six main sections are entitled: Introduction: Reality Part One: God Part Two: Man Part Three: Jesus Part Four: Cross Part Five: Resurrection It is not my intention here to analyse the book in detail - you should read the book. However, I do want to point out some features which I found of particular value. ‘The Story of Reality’ has the following characteristics: (1) It Summarises the Story Before I piece together a jigsaw, I like to do the outline and work from there into the details of the picture. This book gives an outline of the Christian worldview, and, for unbeliever or for new believer, this would be a great starting point towards understanding the big picture. (2) It is largely non-controversial among Christians Greg has avoided issues of controversy among Christians. He has not gone into great detail on prophetic issues, nor has he delved into arguments for/against six day Creation. Rather, he has told the Story in such a way that most believers would be happy to identify with it. I have one or two differences on details, but I would still be happy to commend this book widely to believer and non-believer. (3) It Anticipates common Challenges/Alternatives The most useful feature of the book is that Greg has lived in the real world of evangelism and is familiar with the questions and challenges which are raised against Christianity. This means that, on occasions, he anticipates and answers challenges which would be raised if his point was being made in conversation. Of course, within the limits of this book he cannot possibly deal with all issues, nor can he deal exhaustively with any issue, however his ability to cut through much of the verbiage and speak straight to the issue means that what he does say is helpful, and a most useful introduction to a Christian understanding of the subject. Some matters helpfully considered are the problem of evil, the exclusive claims of Christianity, the creation of God, miracles, matterism, mind-ism, human freedom, the rightness of wrath, the existence of Jesus, the unique person of Jesus (God and Man), the work of the cross, the definition of faith, historical evidence for the resurrection of Christ … (4) It Presents the Gospel clearly The Gospel is clearly and persuasively presented. This is not a Gospel tract for mass distribution, it is a book which could be used for friends and family members to open the conversation about the Gospel, and to show the coherence and attractiveness of the message. I have used books like ‘The Case for Christ’ by Strobel and ‘More than a Carpenter’ by McDowell, and yet I feel that ‘The Story of Reality’ is better than both for it’s comprehensive and coherent communication of the Gospel. (5) It is very well written, and attractvely packaged Greg’s writing is very accessible, with personal anecdotes being used well to break the narrative and maintain interest. It is also clear, simple, elegant prose. You will find no technical jargon here, at least none that remains without good explanation. The chapters are short and easily digested. Also, the publisher has produced a good-looking book with a nice feel to the cover, and I came across no editorial issues. I read this book over a couple of days, because I couldn’t put it down. For those who are familiar with apologetics and well-versed in the Bible story, there is nothing new or surprising here. However, as is Greg’s speciality, sublime truth is communicated in simple, down to earth, language. I think this will be my go-to book in future to give to people who express interest in Christianity and are thinking through some of the issues.

Review: Seen a lot of Greg Koukl videos. Read also good reviews of this book which set high expectations. Was slightly disappointed.
