Review: What if you had enough power that if you didn’t like something you could simply ban it? The young prince in the story is so scared of the dark that when he becomes king, he decides to ban it. Written in the form of a traditional fairy tale this is a very astute exploration of politics, power and its abuse as well as revolt against it. Using dark and light as a main theme allows the story to be very visually engaging, making it easier for younger audiences to grasp the underlying themes of the story. Using fireworks as the ultimate weapon of revolt is particularly effective, creating a great contrast, visually, to the rest of the narrative. This is an ingenious, entertaining story which also reminds us that sometimes you just have to take the rough with the smooth, and that balance in life is all that is needed.

Description: Shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2019. An illuminating tale of power, rebellion, darkness and light. There was once a little boy who was afraid of the dark. There's nothing unusual about that. Most children are afraid of the dark at one time of another. But this little boy was a Prince, and he decided that when he became King, he would do something about the dark. He would ban it. When the King bans the dark completely, installing an artificial sun, and enforcing anti-dark laws, it seems like a good idea. The citizens don't need to worry about any of the scary things that might live in the dark. But what happens when nobody can sleep, and the citizens revolt? Will the King face his fears and turn the lights off? The King Who Banned the Dark is a beautiful and thought-provoking story about how we need the dark in order to enjoy the light.

  • Waterstones The Brontës of Haworth Moor

    Price: £25.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A fascinating look into the Bronte sisters' lives and how they achieved their childhood dreams of being published authors. In 1820, the Bronte family traveled to their new home on the edge of Haworth Moor. There, the Bronte sisters and their brother were given the freedom to explore and expand their imaginative minds, providing the inspiration needed to create literary masterpieces that would be enjoyed for generations to come. In The Brontes of Haworth Moor: How the Three Daughters of a Country Parson Became the Most Revolutionary Novelists of Their Time, Diane Browning brings to life the world of the young Brontes. After the death of their mother at a young age followed by the loss of their two oldest sisters to tuberculosis, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, along with their brother Branwell, discovered that play-acting, games, and writing brought a welcome distraction and joy into their lives. Browning captivatingly reveals how these activities, along with their life on the moor, their brief stints at boarding schools, and their experiences as teachers and governesses, greatly influenced their novels. Though the Brontes' lives included sorrow and heartbreak, the three sisters achieved their childhood dreams of publishing their writings to great acclaim, despite being unknown, unconnected, and unmarried women. The Brontes of Haworth Moor brings to light all that Charlotte, Emily, and Anne had to overcome to become celebrated authors whose works are still read over and over again almost 200 years later. Description: A highly-illustrated retelling of the Bronte sisters life in Haworth in the Yorkshire Dales told from Charlotte Bronte's point of view. Produced to coincide with 200th anniversary of the birth of Charlotte Bronte, this book introduces the three extraordinary Bronte sisters: Charlotte, Emily and Anne. We also meet their brother Branwell. With a mix of strong story-telling and wonderful illustration, Mick Manning and Brita Granström relate the sister's tragically short lives in the remote village of Haworth in the Yorkshire Dales. They explore how the girls were inspired to become writers and the sensation their books caused when people realised they had been written by women. Each of the sister's greatest novels, Jane Eyre (Charlotte), The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Anne) and Wuthering Heights (Emily), are simply retold in engaging comic-strip form. The illustrations and text of this book really capture the life of the children of the moors and how the magic and wildness of their surroundings inspired their work. It is perhaps not surprising as Mick Manning was born and brought up in Haworth and, as a child, even played a shepherd boy in a BBC adapation of Wuthering Heights. Description: A classic Emily Brown bedtime story about being scared of the dark. From Children's Laureate, Cressida Cowell. Emily Brown and her rabbit, Stanley, are trying to sleep. But a Splish-Splosh noise is keeping them awake. It's a Thing! And this Thing just won't go to sleep. Emily Brown and Rabbit try everything, but nothing works. Just what could be the matter? This warm and witty picture book is perfect for sharing with children who may be afraid of the dark. With a gentle message that things are never quite as scary as they first seem. It's funny, it's got twists and turns, and shows us, among other things, that we can spend too much time nurturing our fears rather than trying to conquer them. The Guardian.
