Review: I like the basic premise of this text, which freshens up the classic thinking that all learning, no matter how formal or rigorous, from playground to home, helps the mind continue to learn more. So everything that happens in a given day for a student (or educator) is going to be a part of forming who they are and what they think. With this attitude, a big space opens that lets teachers expand their teaching methods to be more varied, more spontaneous, and more real-world friendly. Most importantly, letting children know that they are themselves educators and have mastery over their choices and thoughts gives them power, and lets them know that even watching clouds or doodling a picture can be activating their brain and helping them grow. I like that this power takes away much of the guilt many children have that they aren't doing enough, or that their circumstances are going to dictate their future. They can be taught that choices matter, and fun choices can be more educational than traditional wisdom. So many times kids are told there's one way to do everything (the teacher's way) and that differences are deficits. Letting them know that being a kid, enjoying everyday experiences, is part of learning and not an option for only 'free time'. I loved this message, and wish it was taught in our school district, where we have 6th graders weeping over a B+ and convinced they won't go to their dream college. Kids locally don't play, they study. And this is a public school! It's managed to push so much on the buttons of traditional milestones that they're taking away childhood. This book would empower kids and make it easier for teachers and parents to cope and feel confident things are going well.

Review: Very good conceptual book on making students REAL learners, as opposed to test takers. Great book for any educator, even if the school you teach in has a structure contrary to LPA. It will give you golden nuggets that you can throw out there and try once in a while without breaking the rules. It's no fault of the teachers that the U.S. is falling behind on education. It's the system, and this book gives a good view of what education COULD be like.

Description: In The Learning Power Approach: Teaching learners to teach themselves Guy Claxton sets out the design principles of a pedagogical formula that aims to strengthen students' learning muscles and develop their independence, initiative, determination, and love of learning. Foreword by Carol S. Dweck. Learning is learnable! Educators can explicitly teach not just content, knowledge, and skills, but also the positive habits of mind that will better prepare students to flourish both in school and in later life. And as 'traditionalists' fight for rigour and knowledge, and 'progressives' defend the increasing focus on character and well-being, Guy Claxton's Learning Power Approach (LPA) brings resolution to this phoney and unnecessary war by offering teachers a win-win pedagogical formula that delivers good academic results while simultaneously turbocharging students' independence, initiative, and love of learning. In this groundbreaking book Guy distils fifteen years' experience with his influential Building Learning Power method to provide a set of design principles for strengthening students' learning muscles, and - together with a wealth of practical strategies and the supporting evidence that underpins them - details the small tweaks to daily practice that will help teachers attend more closely to the ways in which they can shape their students' learning dispositions and attitudes. Complemented by engaging and informative classroom examples of the LPA in action - and drawing from research into the fields of mindset, metacognition, grit, and collaborative learning - The Learning Power Approach describes in detail the suite of beliefs, values, attitudes, and habits of mind that go in to making up learning power, and offers a thorough explanation of what its intentions and guiding principles are. Furthermore, in order to help those who are just setting out on their LPA journey, Guy presents teachers with an attractive menu of customisable strategies and activities to choose from as they begin to embed the LPA principles into their own classroom culture, and also includes at the end of each chapter a Wondering section that serves to prompt reflection, conversation, and action among teachers. Suitable for teachers and leaders in all educational settings, The Learning Power Approach carefully lays the groundwork for a series of books to follow that are specifically tailored to primary teaching, secondary teaching, and school leadership.

Description: In Powering Up Children Guy Claxton and Becky Carlzon harness the design principles of the Learning Power Approach to provide a rich resource of effective teaching strategies for use in the primary school classroom. The Learning Power Approach (LPA) is a pedagogical formula which aims to develop all pupils as confident and capable learners - ready, willing and able to choose, design, research, pursue, troubleshoot and evaluate learning for themselves, alone and with others, in school and out. This approach therefore empowers teachers to complement their delivery of content, knowledge and skills with the nurturing of positive habits of mind that will better prepare students to flourish in later life. Building upon the foundations carefully laid by Guy's first book in the Learning Power series, The Learning Power Approach, this new instalment embeds the ideas of his influential method in the context of the primary school. Guy and Becky offer a thorough explanation of how the LPA's core components apply to this level of education and, by presenting a wide range of classroom examples, illustrate how they can be put into practice with different age groups (from the early years through to age 11) and in different curricular areas - especially relating to literacy and numeracy, but also in specific subjects such as science, history, art and PE. Suitable for both newly qualified and experienced primary school teachers.

  • Waterstones Jazz Images By William Claxton

Description: The photographs of William Claxton define the essence of cool. - Jason Ankeny (All Music) Claxton's innovative choices and airy style, which he called 'jazz for your eyes', worked sublimely to document and promote the rise of trumpeter and singer Chet Baker, especially. - Howard Mandel Born in Pasadena, California, photographer William Claxton (1927-2008) is best known for his dozens of splendid portraits of jazz stars (especially those of Chet Baker, of whom he made the first professional photos) and Hollywood stars (such as his friend Steve Mc Queen). In 1952, while shooting Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker at the Haig Club, he met Richard Bock, founder of Pacific Jazz, who quickly hired him as art director and house photographer. During his time at the label, Claxton snapped and designed album covers at a rate of roughly one per week, in the process establishing the visual identity of the West Coast jazz movement. Where previous jazz photographers captured their subjects in the dark, smoky environs of nightclubs, Claxton capitalised on the sun and surf of southern California, posing artists in unorthodox outdoor settings to represent a new era in the music's continued evolution. Claxton's images graced the covers of numerous music albums, and his work regularly appeared in such magazines as Life, Paris Match and Vogue. Claxton wrote 13 books, held dozens of exhibitions of his photographs around the world, and won numerous photography awards. This book presents a selection of more than 150 superb images by the great photographer. Among the multiple artists portrayed are Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Lee Morgan, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Dinah Washington, and Muddy Waters. Text in English, with an introduction in English, French and Spanish. Waterstones Jazz Images By William Claxton - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
