Description: First published in 2005 in B format as The Holford Low-GL Diet, this book quickly established itself as one of Patrick Holford's core nutrition titles. Patrick is at the forefront of research into fast, safe and lasting weight loss, pinpointing that the secret of successful weight loss is to balance your blood sugar. By eating foods with a low glycemic load (GL), you can balance your blood sugar and not only lose weight quickly but keep it off, feel full of energy and enjoy greatly improved health. In the four years since first publication, thousands of people have followed Patrick's low-GL system with great success, and numerous scientific trials have validated the initial research. As well as encouraging weight loss, it has been proven that a low-GL diet can slow down the ageing process, improve mood and memory, lower cholesterol without drugs, prevent and reverse diabetes and heart disease, and cut cancer risk. This expanded and updated edition - THE LOW-GL DIET BIBLE - is packed with new information on why low GL beats low-fat, low-calorie and high-protein diets every time, and why it is number one for weight loss and good health. Review: I was really excited about getting this book and hoping to balance my blood sugar levels and lose weight. After the first week I felt miserable and imprisoned by this strict regime. My blood sugar had no improvement and I was continually hungry. Both are claimed to not happen on this diet!! I hate the obsessional weighing of all foods, which this book insists you do (reminds me of my OCD calorie counting days) and I began feeling 'guilty' about eating carrots or sweetcorn for example, because they're 'starchy' foods! Which Pattrick restricts - I think this is ridiculous to feel guilty about eating vegetables! He also claims this is not a 'low-fat diet' but he recommends low fat versions of all dairy produce and no certain meats because of their higher fat content! Basically he'd like you to be a fish/chicken-a-tarian. I spoke to a friend who's had lots of success with this diet plan. She doesn't weigh any of her foods, she just keeps to the plate principal, where Patrick says you diviide the meal plate into half = vegetables; quarter = starchy veg and carbs; quarter = protein. This resonated a lot more with me. So I'm following that principal. My blood sugar is no better in it's balance but I feel a bit trimmer. I'm not investing in bathroom scales and tape measures, which Patrick also encourages. The again encourages OCD! I just want to feel more comfortable in my clothes.
