Review: I read this book whilst in hospital having a urostomy! What a very well researched book, full of fascinating stories from the history of surgery. Even my surgeon said it was a good book. A must for anyone interested in an alternative history of what was once a very butchering "art," written with a sense of humour. That any patients survived is a miracle. My medical knowledge greatly increased with this eye-opening book and thankfully my modern urostomy was a great success. I left hospital feeling unbelievably fortunate that all these poor souls had suffered in the name and advancement of medicine, to afford me a life-saving operation today. A really good read and one that could be dipped into at any chapter. Highly recommended.

Review: A sort of a history of surgery told through twenty-eight different operations/procedures. This is a somewhat flat recitation of facts which could have done with some more lightness, assuming the target audience id the general public. I didn't like the all too frequent use of acronyms, Latinisations and initials. The author does try to explain medical terms and conditions, but, possibly, this might have been better achieved by absorption into the text proper rather than the boxes which rather split up the flow.. Nevertheless, this is a very informative book.
