Review: The classic that is the original Dogger was a favourite of mine as a child and one that has been enjoyed by my own children in recent years. The illustrations and some of the language used does seem dated now, but I prefer the term vintage, as the heartwarming story of longing for the safe return of a much loved lost toy is still very relevant to this generation. I was therefore very excited to see there was to finally be a sequel. This Christmassy edition does not disappoint. Here we see a slightly older Dave just starting to move on with his interests, but still very fond of Dogger nonetheless. The plotline is quite similar, in that Dogger goes missing yet again and the family embark on the same frantic search, yet the Christmas theme makes it different enough to maintain interest throughout. I like that they refer to Father Christmas, as opposed to Santa, in keeping with the time it is set (he's still Father Christmas in our house). I especially love the constant references throughout to the original book. Despite being published over 40 years apart, this really does read as a direct follow on to Dogger, as if they were written months apart rather than decades. It was a pleasure to finally revisit Dave, Dogger and the rest of the family after all these years. I'm going to wrap it up for our book advent this year, as a nice surprise, and I'm sure my own Children will enjoy it just as much as I did.

Review: Disappointed with this one, sadly. Dogger was a fave of mine growing up and my two children like it too, but even they loudly announced 'oh no Dogger's gone again it's the same'. A bit more of a Christmas adventure for Dogger would have been far better! He could have gone missing on a visit to father Christmas and had a more Christmas themed adventure. But no. Dogger was in the bin all along. Covered in sprouts. Meh. Boring.
